What are pheromones?

Pheromones are chemical substances produced by the sex glands to attract members of the opposite sex. They are a type of hormone produced by the males and females of many species including, of course, the human species.

Many interesting experiments have been done to prove the existence of pheromones. In one of them, scientists sprayed seats in a theater and a number of paper programs with the hormone androsterone. What they discovered was that male spectators avoided the seats that had been sprayed, but females preferred to sit in those precise seats. In addition, at the end of the presentation, all of the programs that had been sprayed were taken, and the programs that had not were left behind.

The same type of experiment was repeated successfully using telephone booths. The results were that women used the booths more frequently and that the normal length of their phone calls increased when the booths were sprayed with the pheromones.

The first controlled scientific studies to document the existence of pheromones in humans were made ​in 1986 by Dr. Winnifred Cutler. It was the first investigation in which it was concluded that pheromones were excreted by humans.

Although there has been much speculation about the truth of their existence, these studies have shown that human pheromones do exist and that they do influence partner relationships.

So, when they we say that a couple has "chemistry," it’s not just a figurative way of speaking, this expression describes something completely true.
